GUWAHATI, AUG 2: The Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) on Tuesday staged a sit-in demonstration at Chowkidinghee in Dibrugarh against government’s decision to implement Mathematics and Science in English language from next academic sessions in all government and provincialised Assamese and other vernacular medium schools.
The members staged protest for an hour demanding withdrew the decision immediately.
“We strongly opposed to the decisions taken by the government. We demand that they re-think these and withdrew them immediately,” said Parag Jyoti Baruah, president, Dibrugarh district AJP.
He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has given preference to local language in one side and on the other side in Assam, the government implement English language for Science and Maths. We opposed such move of government,”.
The state Cabinet on July 28 decided that from the academic year 2023, Mathematics and Science will be taught in English from class three in all government schools.
It also approved the introduction of a dual medium of instruction from class 6 to 12 in Assamese and vernacular medium schools under the state government.
It was also decided that Geography and History will replace Social studies as compulsory subjects in the school curriculum.
Meanwhile, they submitted a memorandum to chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to withdrew the cabinet decision.
