Assam: Contraband drugs worth Rs 14.1 crore seized from ambulance in Guwahati

GUWAHATI, DEC 15: In a major operation against contraband drugs, the Guwahati police on Wednesday night seized a huge amount of drugs worth Rs 14.1 crore from an ambulance near Hengerabari area in Guwahati.

After getting tipoff information, the police initiated an operation and intercepted a Manipur-registered ambulance at the parking of an apartment in the Hengerabari area.

“While  checking the ambulance, we have found a huge cache of Yaba tablets and suspected heroin weighing 200 grams.The seized amount included at least 50,000 Yaba tablets and their joint valuation was Rs 14.1 crore in the international market,” a police official said.

The police said that this may have been the first time that an ambulance was found smuggling/trafficking contraband.

The police further informed that one person belonging to Meghalaya was arrested with the consignment.

The said consignment may have been en route to Bangladesh.

According to police, last week,  contraband drugs worth ₹ 60-70 crore were seized and five people were arrested in Assam’s Cachar. Just a day before this incident, three drug peddlers were arrested and a huge contraband of drugs worth ₹ 7 crores was seized from their possession in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district.

 During the search, 30,000 banned Yaba tablets and 55 soap cases containing 757.15 grams of heroin were recovered from the two vehicles.

Assam police habe started a massive crackdown against the drugs and so far a huge quamtity of drugs were seized and many peddlers and drug dealers were arrested.
