GUWAHATI, NOV 28: Dibrugarh Police on Monday detained three accused involved in the Dibrugarh University ragging incident.
Anand Sharma, a student of Dibrugarh University, residing at PNGB Hostel has become a victim of alleged ragging by seniors in hostel. He jumped from the hostel building to rescue himself from ragging on Saturday night.
They have been identified as- Pranjit Baruah, Niranjan Thakur and Simanta Hazarika are detained.
Meanwhile, Police search operation is on to nab the other culprits.
According to reports, Anand Sarma’s mother Sarita Sharma has lodged a FIR at Dibrugarh Police station against the culprits allegedly involved in ragging and torturing her son mentally & physically, attempting to kill him, looting his money and snatching away his mobile, taking objectionable photographs by putting alcohol & weed in his hand with a conspiracy for their future defence.
She has accused some ex- students and senior students in her FIR namely, Rahul Chetry (ex-student), Dibyajyoti Gogoi (3rd Semester, Dept of Applied Geology), Subrajyoti Baruah (3rd Sem, Dept of Pol. Sc.), Niranjan Thakur (3rd Sem, Centre for Physical Education), Kalyan Dutta (3rd Sem, Dept of History) and several others of P.N.G.B. hostel of Dibrugarh University.
Critically injured Anand Sharma, student of M.Com 1st Semester, Department of Commerce, Dibrugarh University is admitted in ICU at Aditya Hospital, Dibrugarh.
A case no. 729/2022 u/s 120B/341/395/307/143 IPC was registered at Dibrugarh police station.
It is also learnt that Anand Sarma has been complaining the University authority regarding his sufferings due to the ragging by some students.
He has given written complaint to the Warden of ‘C’ block of the “Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas” (PNGBCN hostel) on 17th November, 2022 mentioning names of 10 students.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has appealed to the students to oppose ragging after a shocking ragging incident came to light at Dibrugarh University wherein a student jumped from the hostel building.
Taking to Twitter, Assam CM tweeted, “It has come to notice that a Dibrugarh University student is hurt in an alleged case of ragging. A close watch was maintained and follow-up action was coordinated with the district admin. Efforts on to nab the accused, the victim being provided medical care”.The Assam Chief Minister said, “I appeal to students, say NO to Ragging.”
