GUWAHATI, OCT 17: In a tragic incident, yet another carcass of an wild elephant calf was found in a forest near Kaziranga National Park in Assam on Monday.
According to a forest official, the carcass of the baby elephant was found dead during a routine inspection inside a reserve forest under Kaliabor sub-division in Nagaon district.
“After conducting the post mortem, the body was buried at the same spot infront of the people and top officails of district administration,” said a forest official.
According to the villagers, the screaming of a herd of around four to five wild elephants was heard on Sunday night. They suspect that the baby died due to knocking by adult elephants.
“The elephant calf had been suffering from some disease and it was treated by the doctors of Kaziranga National Park and was later released” the official said.
He said, “Now, a departmental probe is being started by the authorities concerned to unearth the cause of the sudden and untimely death of the wild baby elephant.”
Man-elephant conflict has been rising in a tremendous pace and in mpost of the cases, elephants entered in human settlement destroying everyrthing.
“Due to shrinking of forest cover, the wild elephants comes out from their habitat in search of food resulting in man-elephant conflict. The forest department should take the matter seriously and take step,” said an Assam based environmentalist.
