Assam: Firing breaks out between Ulfa(I) & Security forces in Tinsukia, 1 Ulfa(I) linkman injured

Guwahati, Dec 21: An encounter broke out between security forces and Ulfa(I) cadres at Pengree in upper Assam Tinsukia on Wednesday early morning.

A Ulfa(I) linkman identified as Amit Mukhiya(29), was injured during the firing and admitted a hospital for threatment.

The incident took place at around 4.50 am, when the security forces entered in the jungle area to nab the Ulfa(I) cadres.

Talking to this correspondent over phone, Tinsukia SP Abhijit Gurav said, “We have went to the jungle area of Pengree to nab the Ulfa(I) cadres who were hiding in that area, they fired at the police team and in retaliation, the security forces fired at them. A Ulfa(I) linkman, who went with the police team to spot the particular area was injured during the firing. He was shot in the leg but now he is out of danger,”.

“A few days ago, we have arrested five over ground workers of Ulfa(I), who have given food to the Ulfa(I) cadres. We  have recovered grenade, wire and some power like substance which is used for making explosives. We have cordoned off the entire jungle and launched a combing operations to nab the Ulfa(I) cadres,” Tinsukia SP said.

On December 19, a  multi-agency security meeting was held in Dibrugarh district on in presence of Assam police Special DGP(Law and Order) GP Singh.Officials from Army, CRPF, Assam Rifles, central and state intelligence agencies participated in the meeting.

While talking to the mediapersons after the meeting in Dibrugarh, GP Singh said that they will launch a masive crackdown against the Ulfa(I) to end extortion related activities.
