GUWAHATI, AUG 1: The prime accused of animal rights activist Vineet Bagaria suicide case Sanjay Sharma today surrendered before the chief judicial magistrate court in upper Assam Dibrugarh. Two other accused Baidullah Khan and Nishant Sharma had already been arrested by the police. After his surrender in court on Monday Sharma was sent to judicial custody by the chief judicial magistrate.
On July 7, 32-year-old Vineet Bagaria, who was the co-founder of Animal Welfare People hung himself to death at his Dibrugarh residence. Before hanging himself he shot a video where he alleged that three individuals of the town – Baidullah Khan, Sanjay Sharma and Nishant Sharma had been physically and mentally torturing him for a long time compelling him to take the drastic step.
Later, on the basis of an FIR filed by his father Kailash Bagaria, a chartered accountant, the police arrested Baidullah Khan and Nishant Sharma from the Lumding police station in Hojai district on July 8 while they were trying to flee the state. The Bagaria family later alleged that the Dibrugarh police didn’t take any step against the culprits and even refused to filed an FIR when they approached them for help.
The incident that caused widespread outrage across the state prompted chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to visit the residence of deceased animal rights activist where he apologised for the incident terming it a failure of the police to take action against the accused.
The officer in charge of Dibrugarh police station was transferred after the CM’s visit. The residence of Baidullah Khan, one of the accused was also demolished by the district authorities few days ago.
