Euphoria and patriotism marks 76th Independence Day celebration in Dibrugarh

GUWAHATI, AUG 16: With the national tricolour flying high in every home and residential complexes, citizens of Dibrugarh celebrated the 76th Independence Day with patriotic fervour and enthusiasm.

The celebration in the upper Assam town began with the unfurling of the national flag at all government offices and institutions. The spirit kindled by the ‘Har Ghar Tiranga’ campaign, as part of the Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, was on display as citizens enthusiastically unfurled the national flag at their homes and residences.

The official Independence Day programme was held at the Chowkidinghee parade ground which was graced by state agriculture minister Atul Bora. The minister who was accompanied by Dibrugarh deputy commissioner Biswajit Pegu and superintendent of police Shwetank Mishra unfurled the national tricolour at the parade ground and took the salute. The atmosphere was filled with the sounds of drums as the police and armed contingents performed the march past with the NCC, scouts and guides and school children. Patriotic cultural skits and drills by students of various educational institutions added to the charm of the occasion which was enjoyed by the huge gathering of men, women and children holding tricolours in their hands.

Expressing heartfelt greetings to the people on the occasion, Agriculture minister Atul Bora paid tributes to the brave freedom fighters who laid down their lives during India’s freedom movement. The minister in his speech also highlighted the successful implementation and progress of works under various flagship programs under the leadership of chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
