Guwahati: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Thursday slammed Congress for not support Uniform Civil Code(UCC).
Talking to media persons, CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “If Congress leader has a daughter will he get her marriage to a boy who have two wives. The issue is the Congress party don’t realise the pain of Muslim women. They take votes of Muslim womens but they didn’t give them anything back to them which is the biggest problem of Congress party. The Congress party wants to take the votes of Muslim make and female but they only serves the Muslim male. Even Nabi(Prophet Muhammad) didn’t support polygamy,”.
“If the expert committee gives a report before that, we will introduce the anti-polygamy law in the next session of the assembly. If the expert committee could not give the report then we will introduce it in the January assembly session,” Sarma added.
He further said, “Uniform Civil Code(UCC), will be decided by the party and ofcourse state can do it but President assent can be taken before implementation. UCC involves various issues, law commission and parliamentary committee has been looking after the UCC and Assam government has already conveyed their support in favour of UCC,”.
“In Assam, we want to ban polygamy immediately but in the meantime, UCC will come then we will not take any action because the action will be merge with UCC,” Sarma stated.
