GUWAHATI, DEC 26: The Union Minister of Ports, Shipping & Waterways and Ayush as well as the Executive President of Assam Olympics Association (AOA), Sarbananda Sonowal presided over the Executive Committee meeting to review various initiatives as well as activities of the Association at the Deshbhakta Tarun Ram Phookan Indoor Stadium on Monday.
The meeting was also attended by top officials of the Association, including Lakhya Konwar, General Secretary of AOA as well as the newly inducted Taranga Gogoi, Joint General Secretary of AOA. During the meeting, it was decided that the next Assam Youth Olympics (AYO) will be held at Dibrugarh in November, 2023 while the Assam State Championship will be held in Jorhat in February, 2023.
The Minister also reviewed the maiden Assam Youth Olympics held in the city during July this year. Speaking on the occasion, the Executive President of AOA, Sarbananda Sonowal, said, “The grand success of the maiden Assam Youth Olympics has given a tremendous boost to the sporting potential of Assam. It’s success has scripted a new horizon for the sporting world of the region, especially Assam, as players from the interiors experienced a stage of top notch competition, good facility and exposure. This will help them step up their game and, hopefully, will be able to perform better at a bigger stage or level. In order to sustain this great momentum, the committee has decided to organise the Assam State Sports Championship in Jorhat in February, 2023 and the second edition of Assam Youth Olympics in Dibrugarh in November, 2023.”
The meeting also dwelled at length on the scope to hone the talent of Assam and make them ready to compete at the national and international level. It was advocated that organisers, sports persons and sports enthusiasts must be brought together through initiatives that contribute greatly to develop a Sports ecosystem. Emphasis was laid to organise sports conclave which will contribute to the goal.
