Amazon India increases e-commerce in Northeast India by engaging 2 lakh sellers

GUWAHATI, SEP 20: Amazon India announced that over 2 lakh sellers including over 1500 from North East India have joined Local Shops on Amazon program since its launch in 2020.

Amazon India launched the program to help bring offline retailers, kiranas and local shops online.

Notably, the number of sellers on the program has more than doubled YOY. This festive season customers will be able to shop from some of their favourite local stores in their cities, get deliveries the same/next day and also benefit from value added services offered by these sellers.

To help new sellers kick start their journey, the company recently also announced that new sellers registering on Amazon.in between August 28 to October 26th and launching within 90 days from date of registration shall be eligible to avail 50% waiver on selling fee across all categories.

This is a fee that all sellers pay for selling their products on Amazon India and is a percentage of the total sales price that is paid by the buyer.

Over 9000 sellers from the North East region, amongst all others from India, are looking forward to benefit from this festive season and will showcase authentic and wide range of products including Raw Honey, Santipuri Bengal Cotton handloom sarees, handmade wicker accessories and Grass and Bamboo items, amongst others.

Kshitij Jain, Director, Director External Fulfilment, Amazon India, said, “At Amazon, we remain committed to accelerate digitization and provide opportunities for local businesses to leverage the benefits of selling online. We will continue to make significant investments in empowering sellers to scale up their business, catering to customers anywhere in India and the world using e-commerce.”

“Amazon has continued to invest in the North East region to enable sellers to leverage the benefits of selling online and contribute to India’s digital economy. As part of this, to support artisans and weavers, Amazon has partnered with government bodies like Tribal Cooperative Marketing Development Federation of India Limited (TRIFED), Guwahati, North Eastern Handicrafts and Handloom Development Corporation (NEHHDC), and Manipur Handloom & Handicrafts Development Corporation Limited (MHHDCL) and launched emporiums like Purbashree and Panthoibi under the Karigar program. Within six months of its launch on Amazon, Panthoibi emporium’s monthly sales has grown 2x. So far, Amazon has empowered over 3.5 lakh artisans and weavers from the region through these initiatives.”
