According to Jaigaon officer-in-charge Prabir Dutta, a post-mortem examination of the dead had been requested, and an inquiry was still ongoing. Authorities claim that a college student in West Bengal’s Alipurduar region killed herself after a video of her robbing chocolates from a mall went viral on social media.
The body of the undergraduate third-year student was reportedly found hanging in her residence on Sunday in Subhas Pally, close to the Jaigaon police station. The deceased’s post-mortem examination had been requested, according to Jaigaon officer-in-charge Prabir Dutta, and an investigation was still ongoing.
The child and her sister went to a local mall on September 29, and the girl, according to her father, was detained as she was leaving the establishment after allegedly stealing chocolates. He said she bought the chocolates and told the store management how sorry she was. But, he claimed, patrons at the establishment captured a video of the entire incident and posted it online, which led to its viral success. The father asserted that his daughter’s dramatic behaviour was motivated by humiliation.
Following the body’s discovery, the neighbourhood organised a demonstration outside the mall to demand heavy punishment for those who produced and uploaded the video online. It was impossible to immediately get in touch with the mall’s management for feedback. o
