Harsh Sanghavi, the home minister for Gujarat, announced on Saturday that a committee would be formed to carry out the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the area.
During the cabinet meeting, the choice was chosen. According to Gujarat’s home minister, “under the guidance of PM Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, CM Bhupendra Patel took a historic decision in the cabinet meeting today—forming a committee for implementing the Uniform Civil Code in the state.”
Gujarat’s state government made the announcement to form a commission to assess how well the UCC is being implemented in the state prior to the 2018 Assembly elections. The group will probably be headed by a former High Court judge.
According to HW English report Uniform Civil Code is a proposal in India to formulate and implement personal laws of citizens which apply to all citizens equally regardless of their religion, gender, and sexual orientation.
The BJP’s 2019 manifesto also mentions of implementation of the UCC. Though many political leaders have backed the UCC saying that it will bring equality to the country, some parties, including the All India Muslim Personal Law Board and All India United Democratic Front, have termed it “an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move”.
There are several castes and ethnic groupings in India. Laws in many religions vary. The nation will be affected if the Uniform Civil Code is put into effect. Rafiqul Islam, the leader of the All India United Democratic Front, claimed that the BJP-led government also targeted other religions.
According to the All India Muslim Personal Law Board, the law’s implementation is only a ruse to deflect attention from issues like inflation, the state of the economy, and rising unemployment.
The code’s goal is to make laws that are currently complicated due to religious differences, such as the Hindu code bill, Sharia law, and other laws, simple once it is in place. The code will simplify and harmonise the convoluted rules governing nuptials, succession, inheritance, and adoption. The same civil law will subsequently apply to all citizens, regardless of their affiliation with a particular religion.
A standard civil code must be provided for all citizens throughout India’s territory, according to the state. According to an Outlook article, DR. BR Ambedkar had made a statement on UCC.
