The regional governor announced on Saturday that nine people had been discovered dead in the debris of a five-story apartment building that had partially collapsed on Sakhalin, a Russian Pacific island. Emergency services were still looking for one person who was still missing.
According to Russian news organisations, a gas explosion looked to be the reason of the collapse. According to a source in the emergency services, a 20-litre gas cylinder attached to a cooking burner blew up, according to TASS.
Russia’s Investigative Committee said it was investigating the cause of the disaster.
