Assam: 2 killed in firing along Assam-Arunachal border at Dhemaji

Guwahati: Two people were killed and two others were injured in a shooting incident that occurred at Panbari area in Assam’s Dhemaji district along the inter-state border on Monday.

As per reports, on the occasion of World Environment Day around 30 people from the area had gathered there on Monday morning to participate in a sapling plantation programme.

Locals said that suddenly 12 to 15 persons from Arunachal side arrived in a vehicle and started firing on the people with guns. One Boga Chutia, a resident of Borbila Chutiakari village died on the spot while another person identified as Monitu Gogoi, a resident of Milonpur village died on the way to the hospital. Two others identified as Pushpa Gogoi and Akoni Gohain, both residents of Milonpur village were admitted to the injuries. Three other people are also missing after the incident.

Dhemaji Deputy Commissioner Ankur Bharali and superintendent of police Ranjan Bhuyan rushed to the area with a huge police force to prevent any untoward situation.

We have taken up the matter with the Lower Siang district administration. We will have a meeting with the DC and SP of Lower Siang. I have directed our Dhemaji SP to register a murder case against the accused persons. Strict action will be taken against the culprits,” Dhemaji DC Ankur Bharali.

Dhemaji SP Ranjan Bhuyan said, “I’m in touch with the SP Lower Siang and asked for his assistance to nab the culprits. Based on the information provided by locals we have provided the Lower Siang police a list of suspected person involved in the incident. Three persons are also missing and we are looking for them. According to locals they were forcibly abducted by the group of miscreants.”

Reacting to the incident, state education minister Ranoj Pegu wrote on Twitter, “I strongly condemn the act of violence at the Panbari area of the Asam-Arunachal border in Dhemaji, where one person named Boga Chutia of Borbila Chutiakari village of my constituency has been killed, and 3 persons – Monitu Gogoi, Puspa Gogoi and Akoni Gohain of Milonpur village have been injured. District Admin and @DhemajiPolice are on the spot.” He later added, “Very sad to share that Monitu Gogoi has succumbed to his injuries.”
