Assam: Anti Ragging committee of DU recorded statement of Rahul Chetry, 3 more students rusticated

GUWAHATI, DEC 8: The Anti Ragging Committee of Dibrugarh University on Thursday recorded the statement of the prime accused Rahul Chetry at Dibrugarh police station.

A three member team Joint Registrar Dr. Rupam Saikia, Law Officer Debraj Sarmah and Dr. David Kardong, Prof. Dept. of Life Sciences and a member of the Hostel Management Committee recorded the statement of Rahul who is in police custody now. The proceedings went for almost an hour.

On the other hand, Dibrugarh University on Thursday rusticated three more students of the university on the recommendation of the varisty’s Anti-Ragging Committee.

Kamal Krishna Kakoti, a 1st semester MSc student of the department of Mathematics was expelled from the university for a period of three years. He has also been debarred from taking admission in any other Institution for a period of three years.

Chitrabon Baruah, a 3rd semester Bachelor of Computer Application (BCA) student of the Centre for Computer Science and Applications and Poban Gogoi, a 1st semester BEd student of the department of Education were rusticated from the University for a period of one year (two semesters).

“In pursuance of the recommendations of Anti-Ragging Committee (ARC) in its meeting held on Thursday (December 8) and after establishment of guilt, and in consideration of the recommendations of the Anti-Ragging Squad (ARS), the punishments were imposed on the students of Dibrugarh University as per Clause 7 (B) (IX) of the Dibrugarh University Regulations for Prohibiting Ragging and Anti-Ragging Measures,” Dibrugarh University Registrar Paramananda Sonowal in a statement said.

On November 30, Dibrugarh University had expelled four students of the university for a period of three years apart from debarred from taking admission in any institution for a period of three years in connection with the ragging incident.
The expelled students were Galab Deka, 3rd Semester (Life Science), Kamaleshwar Chutia, 3rd Semester (Mathematics), Mousum Phukan, 3rd Semester (Applied Geo Physics) and Pusang Kham Boruah, 2nd year (Tai Language).

Earlier on November 28, Dibrugarh University had expelled 18 students from the Padma Nath Gohain Baruah Chatra Nivas (PNGB hostel) for their involvement in the ragging case.

As many as seven students including n ex-student of Dibrugarh University have been arrested by the police in connection with the Anand Sharma ragging incident. They are Rahul Chetry (ex-student and ex-general secretary of Dibrugarh University), Niranjan Thakur, Simanta Hazarika, Pranjit Boruah, Subhrajyoti Baruah, Dibyajyoti Gogoi and Kalyan Dutta. They have been booked under under section 120B (criminal conspiracy), 341 (wrongful restraint), 395 (dacoity) 307 (abetment of suicide) and 143 (unlawful assembly) of the IPC.

In her FIR lodged at the Dibrugarh police station on November 27, Anand Sharma’s mother Sarita Sharma had accused the senior students of Dibrugarh University of torturing her son mentally and physically, attempting to kill him, looting his money and snatching away his mobile, taking objectionable photographs by putting alcohol and weed in his hand.

On November 27, Anand Sharma, a first semester M Com student of Dibrugarh University was critically injured after he jumped from the second floor of his hostel to “escape” brutal ragging by his seniors. On December 1, Anand Sharma underwent a critical surgery of his spine at a local privage hospital. On December 6 he underwent another surgery on his right hand.

A magisterial enquiry into the Dibrugarh University ragging incident is also being carried out by Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sanghamitra Baruah.
