Assam: FERSF submits memo to CM to protect river bank erosion

GUWAHATI, OCT  15: The  Flood Erosion Resistance Struggle Forum (FERSF) Dibrugarh and Tinsukia district on Saturday submitted a memorandum to Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma requesting him to take up permanent  measures to protect the entire river bank of Brahmaputra river in Dibrugarh & Tinsukia district.

“Due to river bank erosion at Maijan, Nagagholi, Pukhrilan, Dinjan etc in Dibrugarh district and at Rangagora, Hatighulee in Dhola, Kailabasti in Sadia etc of Tinsukia district. Several measures has been taken by the Department of Water Resource for immediate control the erosion, which is only temporary measure,” the memorandum stated.

Binod Kedia, president of FERSF said, “In the year 2021 many projects has been implemented by the Department for river bank restoration in the both district, but sevear erosion has been started in new areas and engulfing houses of poor peoples and also threatening to Army Cantonment area Dinjan, Mohonbari Airport, Assam Medical College Dibrugarh and many villages and tea gardens in Dibrugarh District and many villages and urban areas of Tinsukia district a well.”

“We the resident of both district along with our Organisation request yourself with folded hands to take a concrete permanent measure to protect the both districts from flood and river bank erosion and save the people and their properties. We the fearful people, request you to save us from this existential problem. The people of said areas has an opinion to do a wide survey  of the aforesaid area by some reputed private agency who is expert in such job,” Kedia stated.

He further stated, “As per our past experience about the flow of river. We have an opinion to check erosion permanently by means of constructing spheres in entire reach with Geobages or Geo tubes, and this technique  is also low expensive and very much effective. The cost of one SPHERES may be less then 10 lakh. If one thousand spheres will be made for the entire reach of 100 KM it might solve the problem permanently of the whole area, as per our knowledge and it will cost around less then 100 crores.”

“We humbly request you to be kind upon us and take the matter in your own hands by visiting affected area immediately and think about our opinion. We are confident that your intervention will ensure that the sensitive matter is dealt with on a war footing manner to save the lives and property of people living in bank area of river,” Kedia stated.
