GUWAHATI, DEC 29: In a bid to contain cattle smuggling, the Assam police in Karimganj district of Assam opened fire at suspected cattle smugglers along the India-Bangladesh border on Wednesday.
According to police, a group from Bangladesh was planning to enter into the Nilambazar area in Karimganj district of Assam for allegedly lifting cows.
“We have the information about the Bangladeshi smugglers coming towards Indian border to light cattle, we saw them and opened fire on them and fled away from the area,” said a police official.
A police team led by DSP of Karimganj district of Assam Gitartha Dev Sarma was camping in the area since Tuesday night.
When the group of miscreants was challenged and asked to surrender, they fled from the area.
The police, in a bid to stop them from fleeing opened fire.
Police said the miscreants, taking advantage of the darkness, managed to escape from the area.
“No casualty or injury to any person was reported due to firing. We are taking all possible measures to contain the cattle smuggling in the area,” said a police source.
On the other hand, BSF has taken all possible steps to stop the cattle lifting in the bordering area.
