Fierce encounter between Assam police & Ulfa(I) cadres in Assam’s Tinsukia

GUWAHATI, JULY 10: A fierce encounter broke out between the Assam police and Ulfat(I) cadre last night at Pengeri in upper Assam Tinsukia district.

Pengeri is just 50 kms from Tinsukia district headquarter. Pengeri shares boundary with Arunachal Pradesh and very easily the insurgents can sneaked in Tinsukia through jungle route, which are familiar for Ulfa rebels.

According to sources, the gun battle lasted for almost 30 minutes in the jungle of Pengeri.

The operation was launched by a team Tinsukia police headed by DIG Jitmal Doley.

Police suspected that the Ulfa-I group was led by Rupom Asom, a most wanted cadre of the group.

Meanwhile, a joint operation was launched in the Pengeri to flush out the rebel outfit.

“Our operation against the rebel outfit will carry on. We have an inputs regarding the presence of Ulfa-I militants in the Pengree area. We have launched against the outfit which resulted in a fierce gunbattle,” said a police source.

On July 1, a Ulfa(I) cadre identified as Gyan Asom was killed by security forces in an encounter at Kakopathar in Tinsukia.

Sources said the six member Ulfa-I group led by Rupom Asom were trying to sabotage the peace of the region by planning some subersive activity.
