Guwahati: A wild adult male elephant died due to electrocution after coming in contact with high voltage electric wire at Khamanpathar village under Margherita sub-division in Tinsukia on Tuesday.
According to locals, the elephant died due to electrocution which comes out in search of food from the forest.
“The elephant which came into the village in search of food with his herd last night somehow came in contact with the high voltage electric wire and died due to electrocution. We are very much sad when we spotted the elephant lying dead on the field,” said a local resident.
According to environmentalist, the elephant facing food crisis in the forest due to rampant deforestation as a result they are moving towards human habitation in search of food.
“We got information at 5 am about the incident. The elephant aged around 30 years. It was a adult male elephant which comes out from the Dehing reserve forest in search of food. The elephant tried to eat the tree veins which was attached with the high power live electric wire. The elephant died due to electrocution,” said a forest official.
He said, “The post-mortem of the elephant was conducted and as per the forest rule the elephant was buried,”.
Last month, a carcass of baby elephant was recovered from Dibru river at Tokani reserve forest under Doomdooma Forest Divison in Tinsukia district.
According to reporters, the baby age was nearly 5-6 years.
“Recently, many deaths of elephants were reported from Tinsukia district. The elephants are facing many challenges, their corridors were encroached by humans. The elephants cannot move freely and as a result they entered human habitation resulting in conflict,” said an environmentalist.
