Speaking at a rally in 2016, Prime Minister Modi criticised the West Bengal administration, claiming that the collapse of the overpass was “an act of fraud” rather than “an act of God,” as the building company had stated.
The Trinamool Congress (TMC) took aim at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday in response to the collapse of the Morbi bridge, citing a statement given by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in West Bengal following the collapse of a portion of a flyover in Kolkata that left over 20 people dead.
According to the Hindustan Times reprot, “In 2016, Modi said the flyover collapse in Kolkata was not an act of God but an act of fraud. We dare him to repeat the exact words in Gujarat. So many people died in Morbi because God cursed the BJP for its nationwide activities,” Kunal Ghosh, TMC state general secretary, said in Kolkata.
“A flyover collapsed in the heart of Kolkata recently, but the state government did not take prompt action. Several people lost their lives and were injured severely, but the Left front and TMC kept blaming each other for the incident. The construction company said it was act of God but it was an act of fraud”, .
Hours after learning from Gujarat on Monday that Habibul Sheikh, a 17-year-old jeweller from Purbasthali in Bengal’s East Burdwan district, was one score of people killed in the disaster on Sunday evening, Ghosh took a shot at the BJP and Prime Minister Modi. The authorities were informed by Sheikh’s relatives that he had spent the previous eight months working at his uncle’s Morbi jewellery shop. Ghosh enquired whether the BJP intended to dispatch a fact-finding mission to Gujarat.
“The BJP sends fact-finding teams whenever an untoward incident takes place. It would be great if it sent a fact-finding team to Morbi. Let it say why the Central Bureau of investigation (CBI) and Enforcement Directorate (ED) should not probe the Morbi incident. Let it reveal who was responsible for it and how many will finally face punitive action,”.
In response to the Trinamool, BJP national vice-president Dilip Ghosh said that the cable bridge was built by the British more than a century ago. The bridge was not built by the Gujarati government, according to Ghosh. It was recently fixed. The incident’s perpetrators will be held accountable. When the local government can handle an investigation, the BJP does not send fact-finding teams. The situation will be handled by the Gujarati government. Undoubtedly, the Gujarat police confirmed on Monday night that nine people connected to a business that maintained the bridge in Morbi had been detained in connection with the collapse, which claimed more than 130 lives.
