On Wednesday, the Delhi Congress pledged to eliminate all outstanding house taxes if it won the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections. The party has pledged to eliminate the house tax in villages and cut it in half in the future year.
The house tax is a hardship on the people of Delhi, according to Chaudhary Anil Kumar, president of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), and it also brings with it a lot of corruption.
“Nearly 28% of the homes in Delhi are subject to the house tax. So yet, only 40% of people have paid their house taxes. The housing tax policy gives the MCD opportunity for corruption. All outstanding property taxes will be cancelled, and the impending tax will be reduced to 50%. In doing so, we will both encourage more people to pay the tax and end a significant source of corruption within the department “Kumar stated. The MCD launches a house tax clearance programme each year, but residents have never fully paid it. A big gap exists because the shortfall is around 60%. According to the Congress, this allows MCD officials to engage in bribes.
“Our goal is crystal clear: we want a clean, green Delhi like the one we had under Sheila Dikshit. Delhi would become a better place for all of us when we root out corruption from the MCD “Kumar stated.
On December 4, a 250-ward MCD will hold elections, and on December 7, the results will be tallied.
