CID probe given IIT-Kharagpur student death case

The family of Faizan Ahmed, an IIT Kharagpur (Kgp) student who was discovered dead in his dormitory room on October 14, filed a petition with the Calcutta High Court on Monday asking for a CID/SIT investigation into the death. Selim Ahmed, Faizan’s father, claimed that his son (21) was murdered, hence a CID or Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigation is necessary to ascertain the truth. Before Justice Rajasekhar Mantha’s single bench, the father has filed a petition. On Thursday, the bench is set to hear the case.

“The truth surrounding the death of my son must come out. He did not take his life. We feel he was murdered. We have prayed for a CID or SIT probe into his death,” according to the report by Indian Express.

The body of Faizan, a third-year mechanical engineering student, was discovered in his dorm room on October 14. It was only slightly decomposed. Faizan was an Assamese native from the Tinsukia district. His parents requested an investigation into the occurrence by filing a report with the local police in Kharagpur, Paschim Medinipur district. Following the incident, Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, wrote to Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister of West Bengal, asking for her help in securing a thorough probe into the student’s death.

Following this, IIT Kharagpur Deputy Director Amit Patra made a statement in his individual role where he accepted responsibility for the mistakes made because of the incident. He had expressed regret for the “lapses that happened in handling of the matter” and accepted responsibility.

Later, KGP Dhrubajyoti Sen, dean of students affairs at IIT, resigned from his position in response to student demonstrations Authorities at IIT KGP established a committee in the meantime to look into the situation’s management “lapses.”

Faizan Ahmed’s mother, Rehana Ahmed, claimed in a letter to Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Saturday that her son had been “murdered.” Also receiving a copy of the letter was Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam.
