Former Haldia municipal chief is being investigated for graft

A FORMER Haldia Municipality chairman was detained on Saturday in connection with a corruption case, according to the police. Shyamal Adak was taken into custody by a team from the Sutahata police station in Haldia.

The accused was brought before a judge who remanded him in police detention for a day, according to police sources. According to the sources, a merchant complained about discrepancies in certain floating tenders on September 29. Adak allegedly accepted funds from the municipality under the guise of the East Medinipur Zilla Parishad and the Ghatal Municipality by presenting forged paperwork.

The case is being looked into by a Special Investigation Team (SIT). An arrest warrant was obtained after Shyamal was summoned to the neighbourhood police station for questioning but failed to show up.

Police sources claim that Shyamal had also been avoiding arrest in other circumstances.

According to the Haldia police, he spent some time in New Delhi. For several days, a group of East Medinipur district police camped out in Delhi in an effort to apprehend Shyamal in relation to another crime.

In the meantime, Shyamal applied for anticipatory bail at the Calcutta High Court and was given temporary protection from arrest by the court.
