Guwahati, Aug 5: In a sensational incident,  a number of children fell ill after they accidently consume phenyl at an Anganwadi centre at Namaithong village in Kakopothar area of upper Assam Tinsukia district on Friday.

The incident has created tension in the village. At least ten childrens consumed the phenyl.

Sources said the childrens were rushed to the Kakopathar block primary health centre but doctors later reffered a few children to the Tinsukia civil hospital for their deterioting condition.

They are currently undergoing treatment at the hospital, and their condition is said to be stable.

“One of the workers mistakenly mixed phenyl in place of milk, while preparing food for the children. The Anganwadi worker reportedly committed the blunder, as both the bottles of phenyl and milk were kept together” said an official.

He said, “Nobody will do it intentionally. It happened as both the bottles of milk and phenyl were kept together. The bottles got mixed up while cleaning the room. We usually keep phenyl bottles in a box but today it was left open in a hurry as all the workers were busy in a meeting,”.

The parents demaded probe into the incident. “How can the Anganwadi workers are so careless. Instead of milk the Anganwadi workers served the childen phenyl. We demand a probe into the matter because it was a case of sheer negligence,” alleged a gurdian.
