Assam: Civil society demand release of 19-year-old girl Barshashree, who is in jail for supporting Ulfa-I

GUWAHATI, JULY 14: Several organisations calls for release of a 19-year-old girl Barshashree Buragohain, who is in jail for last two months for writing a poem in Facebook supporting banned outfit United Liberation Front of Asom(Independent) and expressed her willingness to join the banned outfit.

The students’ organisation and civil societies demand for her immediate release from jail because her study has been affected.

Barshashree hails from upper Assam Jorhat district. She is a undergraduate student majoring in mathematics from DCB College, Jorhat.

Talking to media persons, DGP Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta said, “The girl Barshashree was arrested because she through her poem had expressed her willingness of joining the banned outfit,”.

“Writing poetry is not bad. I also write poetry. But Barshashree was arrested because she wrote in Facebook that she would Ulfa,” DGP said.

On May 18,2022 Barshashree was arrested and charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), 1967 for writing a poem on Facebook titled ‘Akou Korim Rashtra Droh’ (will again rebel against the nation).

Many people on social media have raised their concerns about the student potentially missing out on her second semester exams which are scheduled to be held from July 18.

Special DGP(Law & Order) GP Singh tweeted, ” Reference arrest of Smt Barshashree Buragohain – Uriamghat PS Case No 20/2022 has been registered on 18.05.2022 and investigated. There’s a specific call to indulge in Waging war against the State in her Facebook post.When someone publicly professes support for a banned organisation and declares intent of waging war against the Indian state, we are legally bound to prosecute that person. Following due process, charge sheet shall be filed in competent court of law. Let the law take its own.”

The Ulfa-I has started their recruitment process through social media platforms, said a police source.

Recently, many youths from upper Assam area have joined the outfit and taking training in undisclosed locations of Myanmar.

On the other hand, many youths who have fled from their home and joined Ulfa have also returned to the mainstream.

Now, the banned organisation needs the support of the youths and they are trying hard through over ground workers(OGW) to brainwash rural youths.

Recently, security forces have carried out operations against the OGW’s and arrested many of them, who have admitted that they were working on behest of Ulfa-I to recruit youths from villages.
