GUWAHATI, SEP 25: The guard wall of Subansiri Lower Hydroelectric Project (SLHP) in Assam’s Gerukamukh was collapsed after heavy rains from upstream Arunachal Pradesh.
“The gurd wall was collapsed after the rising level of water due to heavy rain in Arunachal Pradesh. After the damaged, the labourers working at the site was immediately evacuated. The ongoing work at the site has been shut down and it will take time to start the work,” an official source said.
He further said two of the five tunnels of the hydroelectric project have been shut down by the NHPC to avoid inundation in the downstream areas of Subansiri River in the Lakhimpur district.
The latest developments in the 2000 MW SLHEP dam has been attributed to incessant rains occurring over the past few days in the upstream areas of Arunachal Pradesh.
“It will not affect much because it was a temporary structure. No flooding will happen in the downstream areas. Last two year ago, similar incident happened in the project site,” the official said.
Heavy downpour has triggered landslides, with flood water flowing above the construction of the main dam, causing devastation in the downstream areas.
The rise in the water level of Subansiri in its downstream areas from the LSHEP dam has alarmed the people of the riverine area of a possible flood and erosion on its banks.
“The downstream will not be affected due to the sudden rise of river water. Our work will be hamper due to that and the project coast will escalate due to the mishap,” the official said.
