Assam: IIT-Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed buried for second time in Dibrugarh

Guwahati: The mortal remains of IIT Kharagpur student Faizan Ahmed was buried for the second time at the Amolapatty Kabarsthan in Dibrugarh early on Sunday after it was brought to Dibrugarh from Kolkata after a second post-mortem that was conducted on May 27.

Faizan’s mother Rehana Ahmed arrived by train with her son’s mortal remains at the Dibrugarh Railway Station at Banipur late Saturday night from Kolkata and the body was straightaway taken to the Amolapatty Kabarsthan where it was given a second burial at around 1.30 am.

Earlier on May 23, the body of Faizan Ahmed was exhumed from the Amolapatty Kabrasthan in Dibrugarh following an order by the Calcutta High Court. The Calcutta High Court had ordered the exhumation of Faizan Ahmed’s body for a second post-mortem saying that it was necessary to find out the truth behind his death.

On October 14, 2022, the decomposed body of Faizan Ahmed (23), a third-year mechanical engineering student of IIT-Kharagpur, was found in his hostel room located at the institute. While the IIT-Kharagpur administration had said he died by suicide, Faizan’s family claimed he was murdered. On October 31, 2022, Faizan’s parents who belonged to Assam’s Tinsukia town had filed a writ petition in the Calcutta high court, alleging that their son was murdered.

On April 25, the Calcutta High Court ordered the exhumation of Faizan’s body to conduct a second post mortem at the Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. Justice Rajasekhar Mantha, in his order, directed that Dr Ajoy Kumar Gupta, a forensic expert appointed by the court for his opinion on the likely cause of Faizan’s death, will conduct the second autopsy in the presence of doctors who conducted the previous post mortem in October, 2022.

After going through the second post-mortem report, the Calcutta High Court had recently constituted an “independent team” led by senior IPS officer and ADG Headquarters of West Bengal Police K Jayaraman to investigate the death of the IIT student.
