GUWAHATI, SEP 4: A seminar on “Improving the lives of Women Tea Tribes in Assam” was held at Sri Sri Aauniaati Satra in Dibrugarh on Sunday. The seminar was organised by Assam State Commission for Women (ASCW) in collaboration with National Commission for Women in association with the Dibrugarh District Women Cell.
Speaking at the programme, ASCW chairman Dr Hemaprabha Borthakur said, “The tea tribe women of Assam have been playing an important role in the upliftment of the tea industry in the state. The workers engaged as pluckers in the tea gardens are women. They not only contribute to the economy but also sustain their family, sometimes singlehandedly.
For the development of the women folk in the tea industry the government has introduced several schemes. All the government machineries should work in close coordination to improve the lives of tea tribe women.”
Duliajan MLA Terosh Gowala, Dibrugarh Deputy Comissioner Biswajit Pegu, Dibrugarh Development Authority chairman Sanjay Dutta, DHSK College principal Sashi Kanta Saikia Dibrugarh Municipal Board chairman Dr Saikat Patra were among those present in the programme.
