Why Assam floods are not declared as National disaster?

Guwahati, July 12: Every year, Assam reels under floods but the Central government does not declare it as a national calamity. It’s very sad on the part of the people of Assam because every year the state faces the similar crisis. Like every year, this year too floods and landslides devastated the lives of hundreds of people .

Now, many NGOs and social organisations has come out for help and are campaigning for Assam Floods and asking for a helping hand in the form of donations. Every year similar crisis arises but the Central government hasn’t given much heed to the natural crisis.

The flood situation in Assam has improved somewhat after floodwaters started receding from several villages but some areas are still under water.

This year, Silchar city of Assam was devastated due to massive flood. Most of the streets and houses of Silchar was under water for several days and the people have to shift themselves to relief camps to save their lives.

During the flood in Silchar, the people faced water scarcity because the tubewells were under water. For many days, the people were stuck in their houses and buildings. Cachar district administration used drones to supply a bottle of drinking water to the people.

The unprecedented flooding in Silchar town was a man made disaster because some of the miscreants had breached the embankment of Bethukandi.

The death toll in Assam touched 179 till Sunday and over 7 lakh people were affected in the recent wave of floods in the state.

“We demand Assam flood to be declared as National disaster because every year the people of Assam faced flood like situation in the state. Every year crops are damaged, people die and properties are damaged. Floods have become a curse for the people of Assam. We have witnessed the flood from our childhood. Our area get flooded after heavy rain and we have to face lots of problem. This year too, flood has devastated the lives of the people in the state, killing many peoples in landslides and unprecedented flooding,” said a leader from a students’ organisation.

The Centre has sanctioned Rs.324.40 crore as advance. Why the Centre has been showing stepmotherly attitude towards Assam floods. We have every year demanded that it should be declared as National calamity but why even after several years the Centre has been ignoring the issue,” he asked.

Assam needs a long term solution to end the perennial problem. The Centre had taken an initiative to dread Brahmaputra river in a bid to solve the flood problem in the state but is it the way to solve the problem which affect thousands of lives year after year.
