Firhad Hakim was given a cleaning order by Mamata Banerjee.

Mamata Banerjee, the chief minister, asked mayor Firhad Hakim to clean the area around Prinsep Ghat as soon as possible on Monday. She wondered aloud why there was no monitoring and why she had to bring up these issues repeatedly.

Mamata noted that the roads leading to Nabanna from Howrah, which used to be washed earlier, were no longer cleaned with the same effort. She seemed generally unimpressed with the cleanliness of the streets.

The state health department’s review meeting was where the chief minister was speaking. A dengue infection outbreak has been the state’s biggest public health emergency this year.

The Telegraph has been reporting on how waste that has accumulated over many days can become a haven for mosquitoes. All around the city, people have seen this piled trash.

Why won’t there be routine maintenance? Why do I need to mention this? Officers may change, but government strategy remains the same, according to the chief minister.

“The Prinsep Ghat area’s situation has gotten worse. At the meeting in Nabanna, Mamata beseeched Hakim with a clear tone of displeasure, “Please clean the place right away.

Why did we travel from Prinsep Ghat to Millennium Park, you ask? There aren’t many other areas for Calcutta residents to travel to.

She questioned whether the individuals in charge of the upkeep were little children who required frequent reassurance that they had a task to do. On her Facebook page, the encounter was broadcast live.

“After I step in, things get flowing again. Why do I have to repeat myself every time? Whose obligation is this? stated Mamata.

Heaps of accumulated trash may be observed all throughout the city. According to entomologists, after rain, any amount of garbage might become a mosquito breeding ground. Small containers, like tea cups, that can collect water are almost always present in the waste.

In a teaspoon of water, the Aedes aegypti mosquito can develop and spread the dengue virus. The mosquito requires clean, stagnant water that can stay in a container for at least a week.

Many people have contracted the dengue virus this year in Calcutta and other cities. The illness has claimed many lives. No death toll has been disclosed by the state health agency.

On Monday, Mamata gave the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) the task of setting up a location along the Hooghly where Ganga aarati could be performed on a regular basis.

She suggested that the CMC take some time—possibly two years—to build the location, which must include a temple and a spot where guests can sit and take in the aarati.
