At the Steel Authority of India Limited (SAILDurgapur )’s Steel Plant on Sunday morning, molten steel burst out of a ladle, killing one contractual worker and injuring three others.
The dead, Poltu Bauri, 30, was buried in liquid steel, according to sources at the facility in Durgapur town, and died instantly. Three further people made an attempt to flee but were severely burned when they touched the molten steel.
Prashanta Banerjee, Gopi Ram, and Prashanta Ghosh, three injured workers, were taken to the hospital at the Durgapur Steel Plant before being moved to a private super specialty facility nearby.
At the plant’s blast furnace, in the permanent way engineering (PWE) division, the event happened at 11 a.m. According to sources, the ladle that overturned was mechanically transferring liquid steel from the blast furnace to the slag pusher line. Authorities at the steel plant in the evening called the incident “unfortunate” and formed an investigative committee to look into what went wrong.
Together, the DSP’s labour unions sought a thorough investigation and SAIL-compliant compensation for the surviving family members of victims. Snehasish Ghosh, assistant general secretary of the INTTUC-supported union at the DSP, said that since similar accidents frequently occur, the steel factory officials “should carry out a proper probe into the incident and take required actions.”
According to a source, “These four contract workers were working at PWE under the ladle.”
According to sources, Poltu Bauri’s body couldn’t be found until the afternoon because it was buried beneath hot slag. Hours were spent by firefighters retrieving the burned body for an autopsy.
Banerjee and Ram, two of the three injured, had over 70% burns and were in critical condition, according to their physicians.
